ATENEO ANNOUNCEMENTS:

8 October 2009

TO FRIENDS AND BENEFACTORS OF THE PHILIPPINE PROVINCE ABROAD

RE: PROPER CHANNELING OF RELIEF FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Ondoy has indeed been a calamity, its effects still causing major hardship for countless Filipinos in Metro Manila,

in towns and villages around de Bay and in surrounding provinces. And though Pepeng missed Manila, its lingering

presence continues to wreak like devastation on northern Luzon. And yet, despite the losses and personal tragedies

resulting from these two typhoons, another more welcome face has also shone out in these events, namely the inspiring outpouring of generosity and bayanihan spirit, both here and abroad, that has sought to alleviate the condition of those

in greater need.

Initial crisis relief efforts will gradually move to the massive task of helping to rebuild, for which much assistance

will also be needed. For those wishing to provide support, please be aware that the Philippine Province endorses

Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan [SLB], its Jesuit-directed social outreach network. SLB is dedicated to immediate

and long-term assistance, has wide contacts for reaching those in real need and is reliable for maximizing and accounting

for how donations are used. During the recent disaster, SLB worked closely with the Ateneo de Manila University’s

'Task Force Ondoy,’ another reputable effort. It is important to underscore this point because individuals are said to be

soliciting funds as if endorsed by the Jesuits. Donors are advised to be careful about honoring such requests unless

they are explicitly endorsed by the Philippine Province.

U.S. donations (tax-exempt) to SLB can be sent by check. Issue the check to “Philippine Jesuit Foundation” and

write on the memo line, “Task Force Ondoy c/o SLB" or "SLB Task Force Noah for typhoon Pepeng victims.” Send the

check with the donor’s (1) full name, (2) email address, and (3) postal address to:

Cristina Tabora

Executive Secretary, Philippine Jesuit Foundation

236 West 27th Street, Ninth Floor New York, NY 10001, U.S.A.

[Telephone (212) 627-2788, (212) 233-0888]

Please email PJF or to say you have sent a check. The PJF has waived the 3% service fee for all donations

toward the relief of typhoon Ondoy victims. PJF will remit to the Province the full donation amounts as quickly as possible

within the week for typhoon relief.

U.S. donations online, also tax-exempt, can be sent through the Ayala Foundation USA website

http://www.af-usa.org/donate_now.asp . Click on the “donate now” button, click on the credit card icon, and select

Ateneo de Manila in the drop down menu. Write “Ateneo Task Force Ondoy c/o SLB and DreaM Team"

or "SLB Task Force Noah for typhoon Pepeng victims" for your choice of beneficiary.

AF-USA Donation Forms are available at www.af-usa.org/forms/Donation_Form.pdf. Please email

Marivic Padilla or call her (+650) 598-3126 for step by step assistance or to inform her that you have made a donation

online. Donations through the AF-USA online through credit card will be remitted to the Ateneo as quickly as possible

within seven days net of AF-USA. The 5% service fee has been waived for donations during October, but there is a credit

card charge.

With gratitude to all those who have helped in this project, and commending the victims of both typhoons to your prayers.

Sincerely in the Lord,

WILLIAM M. ABBOTT, S.J.
